CALAO TENTED CAMP

      For independant travellers and ecotourism lovers !

Calao is the French name for the hornbill family of birds found throughout South Africa. With visitors such as hyenas, jackals, leopards and residents consisting of bushbucks, warthogs and vervet monkeys, you will never be far from the wild and firmly planted in the beautiful bush.

The camp is situated in the Guernsey conservation close to Kruger National Park’s Orpen’s Gate and offers self-catering accommodation in safari tents. Once the sun goes down you can enjoy the sounds as the nocturnal animals come alive.

Take a stroll throughout the entire property (26 ha)  and alongside the Klaserie riverside, or search for the Big Five on Thornybush Game Reserve next door. Take a trip to the Kapama Cheetah Project, go rafting on the Olifants River or a day trip to Kruger Park.

    We offer 2 types of tents, blending with surrounding bush

3  SAFARI  TENTS

(12 sqm)

with gazebo and outdoor bathroom (hot shower), 1 with queen size bed, 1 with 2 single beds and 1 with double bed.

The last one has a dome tent close by, for children.

           Tarif 2012:  R300 ppn sharing.                        

                               R150 p/child in dome tent

                               R400 p/single.

 2 LUXURY TENTS (35 sqm)

with large room, ensuite bathroom and covered patio.

1 tent with king size bed and 1 ent with 2 single beds. Extra single bed available for each tent ( 3 people per tent recommended).

                Tarif 2012 : R400 pppn sharing.

                                    R200 p/child under 12.

                                    R500 p/single.

      Breakfast & dinner available on request (if possible, please book before arrival).

                           R60 pp for breakfast.

                           R110 pp  for diner. Typical homemade Afrikaaner meal !

'CALAO', QUEZACO ??

    Les calaos (hornbills en anglais) forment une famille d'oiseaux très répandue en Afrique australe.

Le plus courant est le calao à bec jaune, surnommé 'banane volante" en raison de son gros bec jaune. On le trouve partout et en gand nombre, dans la region du Kruger.

Ils nichent dans le tronc de gros arbres (comme le marula). La male scelle le trou et vient tous les jours alimenter la femelle par une fente très étroite. Garantie pour ne pas avoir ses petits mangés par des prédateurs ?.

En general,oui! Ce qui explique leur grand nombre. Mais hélas, parfois, les serpents comme le mamba noir, sont patients et profitent de l'ouverture du trou par la mere pour tuer la portée...
